What Is A Memory Foam Mattress?
So before I go any further, I ought to back up and explain what a memory foam mattress, before I tell you what a difference it’s made to my life.
Traditional mattresses are made by squeezing large springs between two pieces of stiff material, which makes a mattress that has some flexibility. I know that’s not a technically accurate description, but it’s enough to give you the idea. One of the main problems with these sorts of mattresses is that they do not give evenly, which can put pressure on different parts of your back, causing backache.
When NASA was developing the space program, one of the problems they faced was how to keep the astronauts safe during take-off. When a spaceship takes off, it accelerates at a tremendous rate, causing what is known as “G-forces” on whatever is inside, including the people. These forces can be fatal if not dampened down.
The foam that they invented formed itself around the contours of the body of the person on it, giving them even support over their entire body. This kept the astronauts safe during take-off, and helped me get a better night’s sleep! The foam mattress “remembers” the contours of your body, so you don’t get pushed around as you turn in your sleep.
Once the potential of this foam had been realized, it was adapted for general use, and can now be found in mattresses and pillows. When you lie on a memory foam mattress, your weight is distributed over the area of the mattress where you lie, which prevents you getting high pressure in localized spots – which can cause aches and pains.
If you aren’t comfortable when you sleep, you will toss and turn, and you’ll never experience the refreshing deep phase of sleep that we all need to revitalize ourselves. My wife said that I was moving about all night, and obviously not getting much deep sleep.
Even after sleeping on a memory foam mattress for just one night, you will wake up feeling like a different person. Obviously, the benefits multiply with prolonged use, but you can feel the difference right from the first time.
Nowadays, it is normal for memory foam mattresses to be non-allergenic and anti-bacterial, so you get the extra benefits of clear breathing and germ-free sleeping as well. Another benefit of today’s memory foam mattress is that they are self-ventilating, allowing the air to flow freely, which stops you getting too hot in the night.
So now you know the facts, I’ll get on with telling you more about my new memory foam mattress and how it’s helped me. When you’ve read what I’ve got to say, I’m sure you’ll be rushing out to buy a memory foam mattress too!
Memory Foam Cushions
When we speak of cushions, we would associate these with softness, relaxation and a feeling of stress-free. It is quite true given their supple feature that allows your body to rest for a while at its optimum. Moreover, when we speak of cushions, we think of our bedroom wherein it is mostly seen and used there.
However, these days, cushions have increased its flexibility by being used in other aspects aside from our bed. They can be used in our cars, our seats, our head and neck rest and our health prescription. These may sound extreme for some but it is rather possible given the number of people using them and the number of new items made with them.
One popular cushion is the memory foam cushion. Due to its good quality and the added features, many people would choose to buy memory foam cushions than other types of a cushion. These are known in the market for so long and have established a good name of credibility, durability, and quality. What more could you want for a cushion?
Memory foam cushions are used as an extra comfort to your office or home chairs. You may feel a bit too tired and stiff after long hours of sitting in a wooden or a firm chair. But, with the memory foam cushion, you will feel like sitting in the comforts of your sofa. It feels warm and comfortable and does not distract you from working for many hours. No more added stiffness and tension caused by uncomfortable seating.
Moreover, these cushions come in added capacities like easy transport since it is portable enough to allow transfer from one chair to the other and most of them come with a carrying handle. In addition to its use, many car seats can be cozier to sit on for a long drive with memory foam cushion. You can even have a head and neck rest memory foam cushion for a long trip on a bus, airplane or inside your family car.
The great benefit of the memory foam cushion is its adaptability. First, it adapts to your body’s contour. You do not need to look for a comfortable position when sleeping on your cushion. Your memory foam cushion will adjust to your position and in fact, will distribute your weight evenly. The result is no tension or stress in certain areas of your body after you sleep.
Because of this attribute, many doctors recommend using memory foam cushions to people needing added support and comfort to their bodies. A greater benefit means more than just functionality and design but has extra attributes for you to enjoy.
What Is The Best Memory Foam Mattress?
As I explained in the previous paragraphs on what to look for when buying the best memory foam mattress, if you’re going to buy an affordable twin size memory foam mattress, then it’s worth getting the very best one you can afford. Not only will you sleep better, but it will last for many years, unlike the budget foam mattresses that will probably wear out and compress in less than a year.
So, what brands should you look for? Well, after doing a lot of research, it seems that the very best foam mattresses are those made by Sleepeezee, Sealy, and Millbrook. These three manufacturers have been in the sleeping business for a very long time, and they make quality products. Our first bed when we got married was a Sealy, and it’s still good and strong a couple of decades later. Even the original spring mattresses are still in good condition, although we use the memory foam mattresses now of course.
There are other makes around, including one well-known make whose name begins with a “T” (but whose name I don’t want to mention in case anyone from the company reads this article and gets upset with me), but you’re really paying for the name here. You aren’t necessarily getting a better foam mattress by buying theirs. Go for one of the three I mentioned, and you know you’re getting high quality without paying more than you need.
I just had a look whilst writing this article, and I found that you can buy an excellent memory foam mattress from Sleepeezee, Sealy, and Millbrook for quite a reasonable price nowadays. It’s been a year or so since we bought ours, and the prices have come down since then.
Looks like there’s never been a better time to invest in a memory foam mattress, and give yourself the luxury of a really good night’s sleep.
Hopefully, you’ll be experiencing great nights of a deep sleep by the time I write my next article about the memory foam mattress!
Are Memory Foam Mattress Toppers As Good As Proper Memory Foam Mattresses?
Although the benefits of sleeping on a memory foam mattress are quite clear, you might still be bothered by the fact that they are a little more expensive than normal spring mattresses. Many people are tempted into buying memory foam mattress toppers (also known as memory foam mattress pads) instead. However, before you do so, it’s important to know the difference between the two and to judge carefully if a foam mattress pad is worth the money.
A memory foam mattress topper is a piece of foam, similar to a full memory foam mattress, but not as thick. You place the memory pad on top of your normal spring mattress, and it is supposed to give the same benefits as a proper memory foam mattress. The truth is though, that although this can happen, it doesn’t usually.
For people who already have a good mattress, and just need something to improve their sleep a little, a topper might be a good idea. It won’t give you all the benefits of a memory foam mattress, but it will do a moderately good job at a lower price.
However, you have to remember that a foam mattress topper is only a pad of a few inches thick, and does not have the full performance of a real foam memory mattress. When you lie on it, you’re not going to get the support that you would have from ten inches of real memory foam, you’ll only get the shallow support that the thinner mattress topper offers.
Also, to get the best out of a memory foam mattress, it really needs to go on a firm base. If you take a relatively thin topper and place it on top of a spring mattress, you’re defeating the purpose of the memory foam mattress altogether. The full benefits of memory mattresses are felt when the memory foam goes right down to the firm base below it. If the topper sits on a soft or worn out mattress, it won’t give the support you expect, and will not help you sleep better. The memory foam topper will just sag where the underlying mattress sags, leaving you as uncomfortable as before.
So, buying a memory foam mattress topper is a really false economy, as you’re not likely to see the benefits of a real memory foam mattress, and you might as well save your money. You’re far better off investing in a proper memory foam mattress and getting a really good night’s sleep.
How Do I Clean A Memory Foam Mattress?
If you look after your memory foam mattress and keep a clean sheet on it at all times, you should find that it will rarely, if ever, need cleaning. However, there are times when you will need to read this foam globes’ guide about how to clean a memory foam mattress, and it’s worth knowing the best way to do this. The process is quite simple:
First, take a vacuum cleaner and clean the whole memory foam mattress with the soft brush attachment, removing all visible dust and dirt particles. If necessary, take a soft hand brush and brush down and parts that are dirty or dusty.
Stand the foam mattress in the bath (or outside if it’s a nice day, and you have some clean ground to use), and spray it all over with a mixture of one part fabric cleaner and two parts water. Shake the memory foam mattress to remove any excess liquid.
Leave it to stand for a while. I find around half an hour is fine, and then rinse off with clean water. If the memory mattress is wet, gently squeeze it to bring out the absorbed water. Don’t squeeze too hard, and don’t wring the foam, as this can permanently damage it.
Now spray it again with a mixture of one part vinegar to four parts water, and then rinse it off again as before.
Ideally, you should now leave the memory foam mattress in a warm room to dry. If it’s a warm sunny day, you can leave it outside, but be careful of dirt, dust, leaves, etc, as these can stick to the damp foam mattress, making it as dirty as it was before.
If this is not practical, place a fan heater near the mattress, and use that to dry the memory foam. A hair dryer can be used, but this can take quite a long time and can be dangerous if you get the foam too hot. I don’t really recommend this if you can avoid it.
Make sure the memory foam mattress is properly dry before you put it back on the bed.
If you follow these guidelines carefully, you’ll have years of good use out of your memory foam mattress.
